Some Find Their Balance in Stones, Others In Poems.

Just like balancing stones, finding clarity and joy take patience and practice. Life moves fast, and it can be challenging to connect with our innermost thoughts and feelings. Looking for a space to unwind and connect with yourself? Look no further than our poetry-focused space that offers a plethora of engaging poems that can be used as a tool for self-discovery. Mary Oliver's poem "Don't Hesitate" is one example of how to embrace joy even during challenging times.

“Don’t Hesitate” – Mary Oliver

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,

don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty

of lives and whole towns destroyed or about

to be. We are not wise, and not very often

kind. And much can never be redeemed.

Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this

is its way of fighting back, that sometimes

something happens better than all the riches

or power in the world. It could be anything,

but very likely you notice it in the instant

when love begins. Anyway, that's often the

case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid

of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

Guided Questions:

-Can you recall a time when you hesitated to embrace a moment of joy? What happened, and what do you think prevented you from embracing it?

--After reading the poem, what specific action you might take to "not hesitate" when a small moment of joy presents itself?
